People start pinging us. We get calls, emails, inquiries, you name it on January 1st. Well there’s two kinds of buyers that do that:
- Entrepreneurial Buyer. These are buyers who are either existing entrepreneurs and they’re looking to make their new deals for the year or a lot of them are “corporate refugees”, we call them. These are people who’ve been laid off from a job or they’re sick and tired of their corporate job and they’ve saved up some money and they know that they want to control their own destiny and as a New Year’s resolution, they’re going to buy a business and become an entrepreneur . We get absolutely flooded with these kinds of buyers.
- Corporate Buyer. The acquisitions or bolt-on “Growth through Acquisition” buyer. These are businesses that have made a strategic decision to acquire through growth, maybe in the previous year they did a quarterly planning or an annual planning and they decided that in 2024, they’re going to buy some business to grow their bottom line. Which by the way is the best way to grow. And so January 1st, they start reaching out, they start looking for deals, and they start to look for acquisitions and they’re contacting us asking “what you have got?” and it’s in every category. Then, what happens is they start finding these deals and two things happen:
- #2 as they start putting deals together, they’ve got to handle integration. So they start taking their eyes off of acquisition so much and more on integrations.
- #1, they start depleting their acquisitions budget so as the year progresses, you have less and less of these businesses looking for deals.
So that’s why we see such robust traffic during the first part of the year and it slows down as you get into summer time. So if you’re thinking about selling a business.
